Since making her on-screen debut in 2016, Baker has earned more than a dozen credits. In addition to her roles in several TV shows, Baker has also graced the big screen. No matter what kind of role she’s playing, viewers can always count on Baker for a good performance, and there are many fans who can’t wait to see what she does next. Keep reading to learn 10 things you didn’t know about Birgundi Baker.
1. She’s a Southern Belle
Her character in The Chi may be from the midwest, but in real life, Baker is from North Carolina. She was born and raised in the Raleigh area, although she has since relocated. Despite now spending most of her time in other parts of the country, Baker still loves to get back home to North Carolina as often as she can.
2. She’s in Her 30s
Since Kiesha’s first appearance on The Chi, viewers have gotten to watch the character grow from a high school track start to a college student. What some fans may not know, however, is that Baker is much older than the character she’s playing. She was born on March 6, 1992, which means she turned 31 in 2023.
3. She’s a Mom
Baker doesn’t just play a mom on TV; she’s one in real life, too. In an interview with Currant Mag, Baker stated, “My biggest accomplishment is my daughter. I was in college when I gave birth to her. The birth of my daughter sparked an ambition that pushed me to seek more opportunities. She is smart and confident and I take credit for that! (Lol). Watching someone you’ve created grow into their own person is very fulfilling”. She has also welcomed another child since that interview.
4. She Wants to Be in an Action Movie
Baker isn’t the kind of actor who wants to spend her entire career acting in the same genre. As her career grows, she helps to work on a variety of projects, and landing a role in an action movie is pretty high on her list.
5. She Enjoys Working With The Elderly
From an early age, Baker knew that she wanted to be an actress. While it’s hard for her to imagine herself doing anything else, she told Currant Mag, “In high school I volunteered at a rest home, I think I’m pretty good with the elderly. Maybe I would do something pertaining to caretaking if I couldn’t be an actor.”
6. She Was a Dance Major
Since Baker is a professional actress, some people may assume that she set her sights on the theater program as soon as she got to college. That wasn’t exactly the case, though. When Baker arrived at Howard University, she chose to major in dance. However, she eventually switched to musical theater.
7. She Prefers the Screen to the Stage
Like lots of other actors, theater is a huge part of what helped Baker fall in love with acting. But when it comes to how she likes to perform, she fell in love with the screen after landing her first TV role. That said, it’ll be interesting to see if she does any theater as her career progresses.
8. She Made her TV Debut in Empire
The FOX series Empire had America in a chokehold during the mid-2010s. But unless you paid extra close attention, you may not have realized that Baker appeared in four episodes of the show. In fact, her role as little Carol marked her first TV job.
9. She Wants to Write and Direct
Baker has already made it clear that she has what it takes to shine in front of the camera, but eventually, she’d like to show that she also knows how to put on a good show from behind the camera. One of her goals is to do some writing and directing work.
10. She’s Active on Social Media
Social media has made it easier than ever for people to keep up with their favorite stars. Those who are fans of Baker’s work will be happy to know that she is very active on Instagram where she has more than 300,000 followers. Unfortunately, though, if you were hoping to get the tea, you won’t see any of that on her Instagram profile. Birgundi Baker appears to be the type of person who likes to keep her personal life away from the spotlight.
